Grapeseed Oil

Date Added: May 03, 2009 01:16:55 PM

Grape seed oil (also called grapeseed oil or grape oil) is a vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of various varieties of Vitis vinifera grapes. Grape seeds contain antioxidants (polyphenols, including proanthocyanidins), which show some health benefits. In particular, sufficiently high amounts of resveratrol occur that it can be extracted commercially.Despite this, these antioxidants are not likely to be present in significant amounts in the cold-pressed grape seed oil itself, since proanthocyanidins are polar molecules and therefore insoluble in lipids. Each seed yields a small amount of oil,  so grapeseed oil is usually extracted chemically. The chemical extraction does have an impact on the flavor of the oil, but it makes grapeseed oil affordable for people who want to purchase it. The oil is known for being light in color and flavor, with a hint of nuttiness. It is a polyunsaturated oil, and contains beneficial compounds such as linoleic acid.
Essential oil (except for a few exceptions) should never be used undiluted on the skin, and needs to be mixed with a carrier oil (also referred to as a base oil) to dilute the concentrated molecules and to help spread them over the surface of the skin, and this is done by diluting them in carrier oils. As a rule of thumb, you would normally need about 30 ml of carrier oil to perform a full body massage. Carrier oils, also referred to as base oils, are fixed oils (since they are not volatile) and are from vegetable origin extracted from either nuts or seeds. Vegetable oil molecules can be absorbed into the blood stream through the pores of the skin.
Mineral oils (baby oil is a mineral oil) will not penetrate the skin, and can sometimes act as irritants, and are therefore not used in Aromatherapy. The carrier oil acts as a lubricant between hand and skin in massage. The nutritional constituents of the vegetable oils, such as VITAMINS A and E, nourish the skin itself. Many oils will go rancid within 6 months, but 5% of Wheatgerm or Avocado (both containing the antioxidant Vitamin E) can be added to another carrier oil so that it will last approximately 9 months - eg. 95% Grapeseed or chosen oil + 5% Wheatgerm.

Grapeseed Oil has a fine texture and is almost odorless, light in texture and is easily absorbed by the skin. It has mildly astringent qualities which help to tighten and tone the skin, which makes it useful for acne and other skin complaints. It is rich in linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid quite important for the skin and the cell membranes. Grapeseed oil has regenerative and restructuring virtues and has great skin moisturizing properties.
